Low Country is an exploration of the ecological shifts, and cultural imprints of the coastal South, expressed through the interplay of color and time. This work investigates how the marshlands, tides, and human presence leave behind traces that evolve, much like the shifting hues of the landscape. Through weaving, I translate the transient beauty of the Low Country, its weathered docks, oyster shells, and shifting sands into a textile language that reflects both permanence and impermanence.

Color is a marker of time, revealing the story of place through natural change. The blues and grays of the marsh at dawn, the golden ochres of drying grasses, and the deep indigos of rain-heavy skies all capture fleeting moments within a cyclical landscape. By utilizing natural dyes, fiber layering, and experimental color transitions, I aim to reflect the way light, water, and seasonal shifts alter the Low Country’s palette over time. Just as the land absorbs history through erosion, sediment, and decay, my textiles absorb the essence of place through color shifts and material transformations.

This project continues the themes established in Remembrance by Familiarity, expanding on how movement, adaptation, and environmental memory shape our understanding of place. It considers the tension between the fixed and the fluid; the way a landscape’s colors appear constant yet are always in motion, shifting under the influence of time and weather. The act of dyeing, fading, and over-dyeing mirrors the natural processes of exposure and renewal, emphasizing the temporal quality of color in both land and cloth.

Through this work, I seek to create a dialogue between past and present, between the material and the ephemeral. Low Country is a meditation on time’s influence on color and landscape, capturing the fleeting and the enduring through woven expression. Each piece serves as a visual and tactile chronicle of place, preserving the hues of memory within the fabric of time.
